'Tank Man' photographer on the story behind his iconic Tiananmen Square massacre photo
It is one of the world’s most famous photographs, but even after 30 years Jeff Widener still refuses to display it on his bedroom wall. A globally-respected photojournalist who has worked in more than 100 countries, Widener was 32 when he took the iconic ‘Tank Man’ photograph, which shows a man with shopping bags blocking the path of Chinese military tanks as they rolled into Beijing’s Tiananmen Square in 1989.
Since then, it has become a instantly-recognisable symbol of the fight against tyranny, providing succour for freedom campaigners across the world. But Widener, who so nearly lost the photograph, feels anxious whenever he sees the picture and can barely stand to look at it.
