Question of the Day…Why More Women Street Vendors?
Why are there more women street vendors in VN than men?
I have this impression and think this is the main reason why there are so many women vendors on the streets of Vietnam.
Men in Vietnam are dependents of their parents. They all live with their parents even after they’re married. It’s no problem for the parents who are willing to pay for the bride because the son will have a wife and the parents, an indentured maid/servant.
Most mother in laws are corrosive and abusive to their children especially the daughter in law. She won’t let the daughter in law speak up and if she does so, that’s considered disrespectful and disobedient. If the bride speaks up, she would get a good whipping . If the son knew his mom was wrong and step in to speak up for the wife, his mom would get more furious and would say the son is filial to his wife. Lol Mom would cry bloody murder and then….guess what? One day, the son would have a mental break down and would turn against his wife. Just to pacify his mom and make her happy, he would give his wife a few slapping and or beating.
From their, the son would start hanging out with his drinking buddies and ….his wife would have to start finding a job to support him and the family.
Most women are not fortunate to have an education to find a good paying job so they would revert to any kind of skills they have like cooking for instance; hence, the women street vendors.
Is this right? Please educate and enlighten me.
