3 People Arrested for Smuggling 250 Vietnamese Nationals into Germany
Three people were arrested in a joint German and Slovak action for smuggling 250 nationals of Vietnamese origin in Germany on May 31.
According to a press release issued by Europol, the action included 740 police officers, who searched houses in Hamburg, Schönefeld, Recklinghausen, Minden, Bückeburg, Halle, Bitterfeld-Wolfen and Leipzig. Numerous searches were also conducted in the capital of Slovakia, Bratislava, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
The investigation revealed that this organised crime group was responsible for bringing over 250 irregular migrants from Vietnam to Germany, charging each individual between €13,000 to €21,000 for the smuggling.
The coordinated crime network provided migrants with valid Schengen visas released on a fake basis using invitations provided by different companies controlled by the network in Slovakia.
Once the migrants arrived in Europe from Vietnam, the network would arrange private cars to take them to their destination, Germany. Afterwards, the migrants’ personal belongings were taken, and they were kept against their will until they paid back their debts to the criminal organisation through unpaid work.
This action was carried out in the framework of an Operational Taskforce set up at Europol in November 2020 between the Europol’s European Migrant Smuggling Centre (EMSC), the German Federal Police (Bundespolizei) and the Police Force of the Slovak Republic (Policajný zbor Slovenskej Republiky).
In an action carried out by Europol in Spain in April, 20 people were arrested for smuggling Moroccan nationals through the Strait of Gibraltar as well as charged with the murder of people who drowned while crossing the sea.
The team of 150 policemen was simultaneously carrying out actions in Algeciras, Ceuta, La Linea de la Concepcion, and Madrid. On the day of the action, police officers searched six houses in different locations and confiscated three boats; a rubber boat in Ceuta, a fibreglass one in La Linea and a yacht in Algeciras. They also confiscated tanks holding up to 7,000 litres of fuel, five weapons and portable devices.
Furthermore, in an action carried out by the German Federal Police and the Criminal Investigation Unit Halle, three people were arrested for smuggling around 80 migrants, coming mainly from Middle Eastern countries such as Turkey, Syria and Egypt.
According to the press release issued by Europol, the policemen searched six houses in Altenburg, Erfurt, Greifswald, and Ronnenberg and confiscated vehicles, electronic devices and documents.
Each migrant was charged to pay between €3,500 to €12,000 to be smuggled in Germany, usually in critical conditions.
