A high school senior graduating two years early has been offered admission at more than 170 colleges and more than $9 million in scholarships
Dennis Maliq Barnes, a 16-year-old senior at International High School of New Orleans.
A high school senior in Louisiana has received more than 170 college acceptance letters and more than $9 million in scholarship offers.
Dennis Maliq Barnes, a 16-year-old senior at International High School of New Orleans, told CNN he wasn’t initially looking to set any records.
“As I applied to more schools, as my numbers went up, with the financial aid and acceptances into universities, I became intrigued,” Barnes said, adding that when he was told he was close to the record, he “just went for it.”
Barnes said he began applying to schools in August 2022 and took pride in watching the acceptances and scholarships roll in. “It was never really a surprise for me once I reached that number,” Barnes said.
School officials say Barnes’ accomplishment sets a new world record and have reached out to the Guinness Book of World Records to make it official, according to Clark Castle, a spokesman for the school and Barnes.
CNN reached out to The Guinness Book of World Records for comment.
Barnes has a 4.98 GPA and is graduating two years early and hasn’t decided which school he will attend in the fall.
“I don’t know where I want to go,” Barnes said, but added, “I intend to pursue computer science,” and then go to law school.
Barnes credits his family and friends and faith in God for his accomplishments.
“I am a God-fearing young man; I keep God first,” he said.
Barnes has applied to 200 schools and plans to announce his final decision in early May before graduation on May 24th.
And for those coming behind him, Barnes had some advice, “If you keep your school, your education a priority and keep God in the mix, then you are definitely going to be successful no matter what you do.”

Gà, he applied 200 schools but got offers from 170.
Interesting là, they do not list the top 10 schools he got in
GPA 4.98 is very impressive, and nearly impossible to accomplish because Honor class, A or above is 4.5,
grade is 5.0 only for AP classes.
How many AP classes can a student take? To me the math is nearly impossible but the kid could do it, good for him

He should rather go to law school, in there he can do a lot of things he would fall in love with. He might get lost in computer science field.

Maybe thosé college classes also boosted his overall GPA? Otherwise he would have to take all AP courses while he was in HS and got almost all A's to get the 4.98 GPA since maximum is 5.0 for an A for AP class!
He also has been earning college credits at Southern University of New Orleans while completing his high school degree for the past two years.

Indirectly he's taking away slots & scholarships from other deserving kids!

So out of 170 schools that offerred him the slot, he will have to reject 169 slots and those were the slots that other kids may really want to go.
Colleges will waitlisted some kids and some kids may decide to go elsewhere instead of waiting on the wait list. Hence, this boy may took away 169 slots of other kids that truly want a real slot instead of being wait listed.

Not all of the kids who are being wait listed by each of the 169 schools will get accepted by other schools, so eventually, that open slot will go to someone else. It's a waiting game, and I think that is how it is with college applications; the competition is fierce. In this particular situation, this kid is one of the rare cases, if not the only one.
